Messenger Boy

The first job I had was cutting grass...,
It was a summer job, so it did not last...
So then I washed dishes in a steamy kitchen...
And I learned real fast that's a job worth ditchin'...
I've mopped a few floors and I've paid my dues...
I've pruned quite a few trees and I even sung the blues...

(Chorus)

You go thru a gang of jobs in the course of your life...
To feed your hungry kids and your hard-workin' wife...
Some jobs are better and some are worse...
Either way you'll end up riding in that long black hearse...
But there's no other work gave me as much joy...
As the work I've done...as a Messenger Boy...

I've loaded ships and trucks and plenty of planes...,
I've sent huge, heavy pieces on railroad trains...
I've shipped tons of cargo all around the earth...
That total into millions of dollars worth...
But that's nothing compared to what can be heard...
In the precious gems of the messenger's word...
